Friday the 13th wasn’t entirely unlucky for Nanaimo local, Brad Nelson. With a sold-out Frank Crane Arena for the first annual Nanaimo Minor Hockey Night Brad bought 75 numbers for $50 entering him into the 50/50 draw. Little did he know he’d be taking home over $5000 in cash.
The Nelson family weren't the only ones that won that night as your Clippers bested the second-place Surrey Eagles in a 4-3 overtime nailbiter. “The night was great! It was nice seeing the two top teams go into overtime in front of a full arena.” Brad continued, “I hope it stays full like that. The Nanaimo Clippers are a legacy here and they do a lot around the community. It only makes sense that we as a community support them too.”
The jackpot amassed a whopping $10,210, setting a Nanaimo Clippers record and Brad’s take home from the pot was $5,105. A proud husband and father of two young hockey players, he plans to use the remaining winnings for a family trip, “I’d really like to take the kids somewhere, possibly Disneyland.” Immediately after claiming his prize, Brad started sharing the wealth. “As I [Brad Nelson] was going to claim the ticket, two other fans joked for me to bring them some beer. I figured, why not, and brought them each a couple of cans.” Brad was in attendance with one of his son’s hockey teams and also gave each player on the team $20.
The Clipper’s next home game is Friday, February 17th as they face the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. Tickets can be purchased at: Alberni Valley Bulldogs vs Nanaimo Clippers.
